A section of the audience at Dr. A. L. Mudaliar’s farewell function

Seen in the first row from the left: Mr. Mahendra (Director’s younger son), Mrs. Ramachandran (Director’s wife), Mr. A. R. Balakrishnan (Director’s elder son), Mr. Harendra (Director’s Nephew) and Mrs. Mohana Venugopal (Director’s elder brother, Dr. A. Venugopal’s wife). Dr. A.R. Balakrishnan joined as Assistant Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai in 1988. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1993 and then to full Professor in 1995. Dr. A. R. Balakrishnan also served as the Chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras during 2003–2006.

Seen in the third row, second from left is Prof. Ramasastry (Physics department), fourth from left probably is Prof. Sethuraman (Civil Engineering department) and seventh from left is Prof. K. A. V. Pandalai (Aeronautical department). The gentleman seen in the far right of the fourth row wearing a bow tie is Prof. Anantharaman (Humanities department) A farewell function was held in honour of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar on 30th August 1969. The function commenced at 05:30 pm on that Saturday. Although the venue was initially the Open Air Theatre on the Institute campus, its function was held in the Aero Hangar due to unfavourable weather conditions. The event was presided over by Mr H. V. R. Iengar. The programme consisted of an invocation, welcome address, speeches by: Dr. Bindseil (German Consulate General), Board member, Senate member, a student representative and Mr. H. V. R. Iengar. A speech was also given by Dr. A. L. Mudaliar which was followed by a vote of thanks.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
