The invocation during the 13th convocation, 1976

In the photograph, the invocation which usually took place after the academic procession is seen to be in progress. Standing from the right on the dais include Mr. C. V. Sethunathan (Registrar), Prof. Ramani (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences), Prof. Sathyanarayanan (Department of Chemical Engineering), Prof. H. N. Mahabala (Department of Computer Science), Prof. R. S. Alwar (Department of Applied Mechanics), Prof. J. C. Kuriacose (Department of Chemistry), Prof. B. S. Murthy (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Prof. R. Srinivasan (Department of Physics), a person yet to be identified, Prof. S. K. Srinivasan (Department of Mathematics), Prof. K.T. Chandy (Chairman), Dr. M. S. Swaminathan (chief guest), and Prof. K. A.V. Pandalai (Director).

During the proceedings, soon after the distinguished guests settled on the dais, the ceremony commenced with an invocation during which the audience, students and the distinguished guests stood while a small group of individuals (as seen in images) lead the gathering in chants/prayers.

Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
