This photograph was taken during the Mardi Gras cultural festival of IIT Madras in 1988. Mardi Gras was the cultural festival of IIT Madras which still lives on through the name of Saarang. Mardi Gras took place annually in the IIT Madras campus for a period of 5 days comprising events and competitions such as dance, music, quiz, debate, drama, fine arts, photography.
Professional performances also took place during Mardi Gras and they were a highlight of the cultural festival. Here, in the photograph, are seen musicians Zakir Hussain and Thetakudi Harihara Vinayakram, known as Vikku Vinayakram. Both these famed percussionists performed music at Mardi Gras, 1988.
Mardi Gras 1988 was held from 22 to 26 January 1988. Indian classical music was performed in one of the professional shows with L. Shankar on double violin, Caroline on the keyboard, Vikku Vinayakram on the ghatam (electronic) and Zakir Hussain on the tabla.
