This kuthu vilakku (lamp) was lit to inaugurate the 20th convocation in 1983 by the distinguished guests including Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture) and Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras).
