A dancer lifts another dancer during a bhangra performance at the Mardi Gras festival of 1983. ‘Mardi Gras’ is partially visible above the stage as is the logo of IIT Madras. A total of 6 dancers are seen taking part in the dance competition during Mardi Gras '83.

This photograph was taken during Mardi Gras ‘83 which was held in the IIT Madras campus from 26 January to 30 January, 1983. A cultural festival with various events spread over a number of days, Mardi Gras was well-loved in its time and has since been known as Saarang. Mardi Gras comprised events of several types: arts and the performing arts (music, dance, theatre), quizzes, debates, and other informal events.

Photographer:
N. S. Vinodh. After completing an early education in Bangalore, N. S. Vinodh obtained his B. Tech. in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras in 1986. Being the secretary of the Photography Club at IIT Madras during his third year, he was an avid photography enthusiast. He then went on to complete his MBA from IIM, Lucknow, and later spent his career holding senior positions in the field of corporate real estate with leading multinational financial services companies. He continued to pursue his hobby of photography, integrating it with his love of travel and wildlife.
