Cultural Events , Student Activities
Taken at Mardi Gras ‘83, this photograph shows a Mardi Gras ticket counter, the student organisers of the event, other students, and a possible participant at the counter.
The other items visible in this image are two 1983 Mardi Gras posters announcing ‘The Ananda Shankar Experience’ with performances also by Pandit Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain and Pandit M. Janardhan, an NCC notice board with the words “NCC Notices” on it, a rolled-up banner, and a blackboard with ‘St. Johns’ and ‘Mt Carmel’ seen on it which is perhaps a scoreboard of Mardi Gras ‘83, keeping track of the points.
Mardi Gras, now known as Saarang, was a cultural festival occurring annually for 5 days with dance, music, quiz, debate, sketching, photography, drama, and other competitions. Mardi Gras ’83 took place from 26 to 30 January and the name of this album suggests that it contains photographs from the second day, 27 January 1983.
