The photograph shows Prof. N. V. C. Swamy (Director, wearing a blue tie), Marianne von Weizsäcker (to Prof. Swamy's left-hand side) and Dr. Richard von Weizsäcker (President of the Federal Republic of Germany, next to Mrs. Weizsäcker). To the extreme right is Ms. Maneka Gandhi (Union Minister of State [Independent Charge], Environment and Forests, wearing a black sari). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
On 4 March 1991, the German President was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) at a special convocation held at IIT Madras.
