The events associated with music during Mardi Gras ‘83, similar to the other editions of the festival, included the Indian Classical Music, Indian Light Music, Western Solo and Western Group competitions. The Western Solo competition included both vocals and instrumental categories.
The Western Music Group competition was preceded by auditions after which five groups were chosen to compete, that were held prior to the competition for Madras teams and during the competition for outstation teams. In the Indian Light Music competition participants and teams were given fifteen minutes to perform with a maximum of eight participants on stage at a time.
