A view of participants in Shanti Kunj at Mardi Gras, 1983

Cultural Events , Student Activities

In this photograph, a board saying “Wanna T things straight” and “Have a squint” is seen in the foreground. This board seems to be tied from a height to ensure that it does not fall over and remains visible across Shanti Kunj. A large number of participants is seen in the photograph, taking part is various events  which could be Fine Arts events as traditionally those events were held at Shanti Kunj.

Apart from students, bicycles are also seen in the photograph, perhaps belonging to the participants. Another board “Binny: Polyester Blended Shirting” is visible within the photograph, towards the back.

Mardi Gras, now known as Saarang, was a cultural festival occurring annually for 5 days with dance, music, quiz, debate, sketching, photography, drama, and other competitions. Mardi Gras 1983 took place from 26 to 30 January 1983. From the name that this album was given, this album appears to comprise images from day 2 of Mardi Gras ‘83, meaning that this photograph was probably taken on 27 January 1983.
