A view of the stage during a musical performance, Mardi Gras ‘83

Cultural Events , Student Activities

The main focus in the photograph is the musical performance that was going on at the time. This photograph has captured a moment from the 1983 Mardi Gras that took place at IIT Madras. As the light has fallen on the stage, the participants are in focus. A veena and harmonium are the instruments used by the three performers.

The large number of people in the audience shows the keen interest in the musical performance.  A poster for “Natural Sound Stereo Systems” is also seen in the extreme left of the photograph.

Mardi Gras, now known as Saarang, was a cultural festival occurring annually for 5 days with dance, music, quiz, debate, sketching, photography, drama, and other competitions. Mardi Gras 1983 took place from 26 to 30 January 1983. From the name that this album was given, this album appears to comprise images from day 2 of Mardi Gras ‘83, meaning that this photograph was taken on 27 January 1983.
