This photograph was taken during the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel in 1966. The photograph was also published in the April 1966 edition of Campastimes. The article, referring to the river-inspired names of IIT Madras hostels, humorously pointed out, “Yet another river has been added to the road map of our Institute.” The ninth Hostel in the Campus, Alakananda, was inaugurated by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras).

The building seen in the background is Jamuna Hostel.

Standing, from the left, Mr. V. C. Jacob (Gymkhana Secretary), chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras, second from left), Mr. C. V. Sethunathan (Registrar, sixth from left) and Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, seventh from left, wearing sunglasses). Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (the Director’s wife) can be seen to the extreme left.

Also seen in the picture are Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, behind Mrs. Singh), Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, next to Prof. Narayanamurthi) and Ms Janaki Seshadri (behind Mrs. Sengupto), one of the first two girl students to enrol in the 5-year B.Tech. programme at IIT Madras. Incidentally, the issue of Campastimes that described the inauguration of Alakananda also carried an article by the pioneering girl students.

Mr. S. S. Mani (Workshop Superintendent and Alakananda Warden) can be partially seen to the extreme right.
