Central Workshop

Academic Facilities , Campus Buildings

The Central Workshop was one of the earliest buildings to be built in the Institute. It was completed in August 1961 along with the Building Sciences Block (BSB). Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer) gives details of this construction in the Souvenir Volume to commemorate the visit of His Excellency Dr. Heinrich Luebke to IIT Madras on 3 December 1962 to lay the foundation stone. He writes, “The workshop provides for 7 distinct halls for each of the various sections, namely, carpentry, foundry and smithy, fitting shop, machine shop, electrical shop, welding shop and production engineering.”

Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.
