The chief guest, Dr. V. V. Giri, unveils the bust of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar at the seventh convocation ceremony

During the proceedings of the seventh convocation, the chief guest, Dr. V. V. Giri unveiled a bust of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (first Chairman, Board of Governors). Today the bust can be found at the Institute’s Heritage Centre.

 
Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (1887-1974) was a renowned Indian educationist and physician. He was the longest serving Vice-Chancellor of Madras University (27 years), principal of Madras Medical College and Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He was also elected as the Chairman of the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board in 1949 and 1950. He was knighted in the 1945 New Year Honours and awarded the prestigious civilian awards, Padma Bhushan in 1954 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1963 for his valuable contributions to education in India.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
