The chief guest examines the machinery at the Hydraulics Laboratory, 1970

Dr. K. L. Rao, Union Minister for Irrigation and Power was the chief guest for the inauguration function of the Hydraulics Laboratory on 3 August 1970. A Campastimes report notes that Dr. Rao was taken around the Laboratory by Prof. Gerhard Rouve and Prof. A. Ramachandran after declaring open the towing tank.

Seen in the photograph are Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, extreme right), Prof. Gerhard Rouve (Civil Engineering Department, to Prof. Ramachandran’s right hand side) and Dr. K. L. Rao (wearing a light coloured shirt).

Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
