This photograph was taken in January 1968 when the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) held a seminar at IIT Madras. The DAAD was founded in 1925, offering merit-based grants to students from other countries to study in various universities in Germany. According to German News Weekly, around 500 Indians had received scholarships under the programme between 1952 and 1968.
The agenda of the seminar was to “exchange ideas for a possible improvement of the future programmes of the service” and also to make the former scholarship holders aware of the progress in Science and Technology in Germany.
Seen in the photograph, Dr. Emil Lehnartz (President of the DAAD, holding a cane) and Mrs. Lehnartz (closest to the camera, smiling).
