Distinguished guests and the Director at IIT Madras, 1968

This photograph was taken in January 1968 when the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) held a seminar at IIT Madras. The DAAD was founded in 1925, offering merit-based grants to students from other countries to study in various universities in Germany. According to German News Weekly, around 500 Indians had received scholarships under the programme between 1952 and 1968.

The seminar was attended by over 50 Indian grantees of German Scholarships. It was also attended by Dr. Karl Pfauter (Consul General, Federal Republic of Germany, extreme right), Dr. Emil Lehnartz (President of the DAAD, second from right), Mrs. Lehnartz (third from right), Miss. Marga E. Schmitz (Officer-in-charge, Scholarships Division, DAAD, Bad Godesberg, fourth from left), Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director of IIT Madras, fifth from left) and Dr. H. Hessberger (Director, DAAD, India Branch, New Delhi, extreme left).
