Dr. Emil Lehnartz addresses the audience, 1968

Dr. Lehnartz visited IIT Madras in January 1968 to take part in a seminar organized by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Dr. Lehnartz was nearing the end of his tenure as President of the DAAD in 1968 when this event took place. The DAAD was founded in 1925, offering merit-based grants to students from other countries to study at various universities in Germany. According to German News Weekly, around 500 Indians received scholarships under the programme between 1952 and 1968. 

The visit of Dr. Lehnartz has been recorded in German News Weekly (January and February 1968), providing a report of the event. According to German News Weekly, Dr. Lehnartz said that the programme had “increased the number of scholarships and widened the range of subjects for the award of grants.”
