A farewell function was held in honour of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar on 30th August 1969. In his address, Dr. A. L. Mudaliar spoke about the genesis of the Institute. He reminisced about the very beginning in 1946 when the Education Member, Government of India called for a meeting of all members of various states, businessmen and industrialists to discuss the possibilities of setting up technical institutes in India. Dr. Mudaliar was part of this meeting and actively participated in the growth and development of IIT Madras, in particular, ever since. He served as the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT, Madras a total of 10 years, from 1959 to 1969.
Dr. A. Ramaswami Mudaliar and Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar 81st Birthday Commemoration Volume (A Garland of Tributes to the Arcot Brothers - ‘The Pride of Bharath’) was released two years prior to the farewell on 14th October 1967 by Dr. Sir. M. A. Muthiah Chettiar and presented by Mr. C. N. Annaduari (Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu) at a public function held at the Senate House, Madras on saturday 21st October 1967 at 05:15 pm.
