Dr. M. S. Swaminathan (chief guest) can be seen giving away a prize to a student in the photograph and the audience is seen in the background, at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). There is also an individual with a camera who can be seen capturing a photograph.

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan is an Indian geneticist and administrator known for his role in India’s Green Revolution. He played a significant role in introducing and developing high-yielding varieties of wheat in India. He served as the seventh Chairman of the Board of Governors (from 1991 to 1997). After completing bachelor’s degrees in biology, zoology and agricultural science, he went on to complete his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1952 and undertake post-doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Swaminathan has received various awards from the Government of India, including the Padma Shri, in 1967, the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, and the Padma Vibhushan, in 1989.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
