Dr. M. S. Swaminathan inspects a Guard of Honour during the 13th convocation, 1976

Convocations , Institute Events

In this photograph, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan (chief guest) inspects the Guard of Honour, escorted by Prof. V. Subramanian (Head of N. C. C.). At the convocation, the proceedings of the ceremony began with the arrival of the chief guest to the institute. The Director of the Institute and the Registrar always received and greeted the chief guest at the beginning of the ceremony.

Once the chief guest was received, he was then escorted to inspect the Guard of Honour that was presented by the N.C.C. cadets. Generally, a Guard of Honour can be any military unit that acts as a Guard. Usually, the Guard of Honour is appointed to receive or guard a head of state or other distinguished guests, the fallen in war, or to attend state-ceremonials. The Guard of Honour disappeared from proceedings from the year 1982 onwards.

An identical photograph can be found in the Gourishankar Collection in Album 0210 under the ID 001/0210/IMG_0348.
