This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ annual cultural and social event Saarang. It is likely that the sculptures were made from clay as part of a contest, but this is yet to be confirmed. There were plenty of contests and competitions organized at Saarang. College students from across the country came to IIT Madras in order to participate in the events and witness the various music shows which were held during the evenings.
Dr. Madhumathi (wearing a sari) is from the Department of Management Studies. She completed her Ph.D. in banking from the University of Madras in 1990 following a degree in M.Com. at the same university.
