Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar speaks at the inauguration of the Central School building at IIT Madras, 1965

Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar was a member of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He was appointed Minister-in-Charge of Education, Public Health and Excise in the year 1936. With a passion for Tamil language, literature, music, and culture, he made significant contributions to the Tamil cause and was awarded the title of Tamil Isai Kavalar.

Seen in the photograph (from the left): Dr. C. D. Deshmukh (Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi), Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) and Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, IIT Madras) on the dais, with Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar (Member, Board of Governors) at the microphone. The person seated on the stage, in the front, is yet unidentified.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
