Dr. S. Bhagavantam at IIT Madras, 1969

Dr. S. Bhagavantam was the chief guest to the sixth convocation at IIT Madras. He was a well-known visionary scientist, administrator and architect of defense research. Prior to the proceedings of the sixth convocation, he visited the laboratories and workshop facilities in the Institute. 

The experimental setup in the photograph is a large scale analogue model to study the properties of semiconductors. Information from Prof. V. G. K. Murti.

From the left, Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director), Prof. M. K. Achyuthan (Electrical Engineering Department), Dr. S. Bhagavantam (chief guest and Scientific Adviser to the Minister of Defence) and Mr. K. Narayana Bhat (extreme right). Mr. Bhat completed his M.Tech. (Electrical Engineering) degree in 1969 and Ph. D. in 1978 from IIT Madras. Between the years 1969 and 1973, he was Associate Lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Department. This photograph was possibly taken during that period.

Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
