The chief guest and speaker at IIT Madras’s first convocation, which was held on the 11th of July, 1964 was Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, President of India (1962-1967). On the day of the event, upon reaching the campus, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was received by Prof. B. Sengupto, Director of the Institute, and Mr. R. Natarajan, Registrar and Commodore Rabinder Nath Batra (Chief Navy Officer). The Chief Guest was then presented a Guard of Honour by the cadets of the N.C.C. He inspected the guard along with Prof. G. V. N. Rayudu (2/Lt NCC commander, Department of Mechanical Engineering). Next he was taken to the robing room where he was received by Dr. A L. Mudaliar.
