The chief guest and speaker at IIT Madras’s first convocation, which was held on the 11th of July, 1964 was Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, President of India. On the day of the event, upon reaching the campus, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was received by Prof. B. Sengupto, Director of the Institute, and Mr. R. Natarajan, Registrar and a naval officer, identified as Commodore Rabinder Nath Batra. The Chief Guest was then presented a guard of Honour by the cadets of the N.C.C. He inspected the guard of Honour along with Prof. G. V. N. Rayudu (2/Lt NCC commander, Department of Mechanical Engineering).

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
