A special convocation was held on 22nd March 1977 at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT) in the Humanities and Sciences Block. This convocation was specially held for the conferment of the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) on Mr. Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Federal Republic of Germany. Possibly after the ceremony, Mr. Hans-Dietrich Genscher and his wife were escorted by Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi who succeeded Dr. K. A. V. Pandalai as Director that year, to an exhibition held at the Institute. Earlier that year on 21st January 1977 another special convocation was held for the conferment of the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) on Dr. John Bardeen, Nobel Laureate in Physics.
