The foundation stone of the Hydraulics Laboratory is unveiled by Dr. K. L. Rao, 1970

Dr. K. L. Rao, the chief guest, unveiled the stone during the inauguration of the Hydraulics Laboratory. The inauguration has been recorded in an issue of Campastimes

The photograph was taken outside the Hydraulics Laboratory under a shamiana, where the audience had gathered to witness the event. “Most of them sat staring at a marble stone thinly veiled by a yellow diaphanous fabric”. 

The foundation stone reads “Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory / Declared Open by / Dr.   K. L. Rao / Union Minister for Irrigation & Power / On 3rd August 1970”.

Seen in the photograph is Prof. Gerhard Rouve (extreme left, Civil Engineering Department).

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
