When Heuss visited, IIT Madras had its office at CLRI and classrooms at A.C. Tech. Heuss was the former President of the Federal Republic of Germany. His term as President ended in 1959, around a year before he visited IIT Madras.

Seen in the photograph are, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, first from right) and a gentleman likely to be Heuss' translator (second from right). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
