Campus Buildings , Campus Facilities
In the Souvenir Volume to commemorate the visit of His Excellency Dr. Heinrich Luebke to IIT Madras on 3 December 1962 to lay the foundation stone, Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer) writes that a small hospital with 15 beds was proposed to be constructed on campus. The Convocation Brochure of IIT Madras, 1966 reports that a new hospital building was built and commissioned in that year. The Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-1966 also makes note of the completion of a new hospital building at a cost of about 2.23 lakh rupees. The Institute Hospital website however affirms that the Hospital was started in 1969 with a single medical officer and helper. This information is yet to be confirmed. With reference to the Annual Reports of IIT Madras, it has been ascertained that there was an ‘Institute Dispensary’ prior to 1969. It was referred to as a ‘Medical Centre’ in the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1967. However, it was only from the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1969 and its subsequent Annual Reports that it was referred to as an ‘Institute Hospital’. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1970 notes that an ambulance was provided for patients in the academic year 1969-1970.
Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982. The gate seen in the picture does not exist today (as of December 2021).
