This photograph was taken on 17 November 1973. A Special Convocation and the Computer Centre Inauguration were held on this day at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT). The convocation was held to confer the honourary degree of Doctor of Science upon Dr. Erhard Eppler who was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany at the time. Honourary degrees are given by colleges and universities to persons who have contributed immensely to a particular cause.

The Humanities and Sciences Block was built in the early 1960s. Around 90% of the building was completed in the 1963-64 academic year according to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1963. The board placed at the entrance of the building reads “Special Convocation and Computer Centre Inauguration / 17.11.1973”.

It is likely that the person in the white uniform coming out from the building is Mr. T. N. Venkataraman, the Chief Security Officer.

Photographer:

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
