IIT Madras hockey team receives the Inter-IIT hockey trophy for the first time, 1970

The IIT Madras hockey team tasted victory in the Inter-IIT Sports Meet for the first time in 1970, when they beat IIT Kharagpur. K. Sashi Rao, member of the IITM hockey team from 1965-66 to 1970-71 writes in an article titled ‘Seven Years To Hockey Glory’ in Chennai 36, “We put up a splendid all-round team performance both in attack and defense and it was a great team effort and avenged the previous year’s finals defeat.” 

The trophy was presented by Mrs. Iengar, wife of the Chairman, Board of Governors.

Seen in the photograph, from left, Raghavendra Rao, Prem Watsa (Sports Secretary), Ashokan and D. A. Muthana (Captain). They were all members of the IIT Madras hockey team. Also seen, Mrs. Iengar (in saree) and to her right hand side Mr. Navzer Mehta (General Secretary). The other members of the hockey team that year were Ranjan Somiah, Ajit Purang, B. Kumar, Ashokan, Muthana (Captain), K. Sashi Rao, Ravi Kannan, Prem Watsa, Chandrasekhar, Anantanarayan, Raghavendra Rao, Mammen, Victor Paes, David Roby and Khatri.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
