The building in the background is the NCC building. The building was completed at a cost of 5.8 lakhs (according to the Seventh Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-66). It was constructed to house the different units of the NCC in IIT Madras. During the time, IIT Madras had four technical NCC units which had replaced the NCC Rifles in 1964. The units were 6 Madras Engineer Coy., 3 Madras Signal Coy., 6 Madras (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Unit (2 Coy.) and 4 Madras Technical Air Squadron. The NCC unit in IIT Madras currently has one unit, 4 (TN) Air Sqn. Tech. NCC.
