Mansoor Ali Khan, Nawab of Pataudi inaugurating the Third Inter-IIT Sports Meet, 1964

Mansoor Ali Khan, the Indian cricket captain is known for leading India to their first overseas win against New Zealand in 1967. Apart from cricket, Mansoor also played hockey and billiards for Oxford. He also played the midfield position in football. 

Khan, chief guest at the event, inaugurated the stadium at IIT Madras and declared the meet open. Mr. B. S. Sudhir Chandra, in his article in the first issue of ‘Pradeep’ writes that Khan gave a short speech in which he stressed the role of games and physical activity in Universities. The march past of the five contingents took place after this speech.
 
The person in the white uniform (in background) is most likely Mr. T. N. Venkataraman (Chief Security Officer).

Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
