This photograph was taken during the event where the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) officially handed over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. Mr. Hans Klein from the FRG visited IIT Madras to take part in this event.

Mr. A. L. Mudaliar served as the sixth Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, from December 1987 to January 1991. He was the son of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar, the first Chairman, and the younger brother of Dr. A. Ramachandran, the second Director of IIT Madras. Mr. Mudaliar also served as Chairman of India Cements, Titan Industries and Bata India during the course of his career.
