The photograph was taken when Mr. Giani Zail Singh (chief guest and President of India) arrived for the 20th convocation of IIT Madras.
He arrived with a motorcade as seen in the photograph. The event also marked 25 years since the founding of IIT Madras. It was the Silver Jubilee Year of IIT Madras, and one of the main events was the opening of the Student Activities Centre (SAC), a new building which was built for the purpose of holding convocations, meetings, functions and conducting sports.
