This photograph was taken in the newly opened Student Activities Centre (SAC) in 1983 during the 20th convocation. In the photograph, Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest) lights the kuthu vilakku (lamp) to inaugurate the 20th convocation.

Seen in the photograph are Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture, extreme left), Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, second from left), Dr. H. V. Hande (Minister of Health, fifth from left in black shirt), Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest, lighting the lamp) and Prof. Johnson Victor (Civil Engineering Department, extreme right). The other individuals in the photograph are yet to be identified.
