The photograph was taken on the 20th convocation day in 1983. The sapling marked the inauguration of the Student Activities Centre (SAC). SAC was constructed to host convocations, indoor sports activities and other lectures. It was a practical alternative to the Open Air Theatre (OAT) which would get flooded during rains.
Seen in the photograph are, Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest, seated right), Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, standing second from right), Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director of IIT Madras, standing third from right, partially covered by the sapling) and Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture, fifth from left). The lady next to Mrs. Kaul is Mrs. Manjit Kaur (daughter of Mr. Giani Zail Singh). The other personalities in the photograph are yet to be identified.
