The photograph was probably taken outside the Student Activities Centre (SAC) building during the 20th convocation in 1983.
Seen in the photograph are several distinguished guests and administrators, Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest, wearing white turban), Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director of IIT Madras, extreme left), Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay, second from left), Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman and Board of Governors of IIT Madras, third from left). The lady with her back turned is possibly the daughter of President Mr. Giani Zail Singh, Mrs. Manjit Kaur but this is yet to be confirmed.
The other individuals in the photograph are yet to be identified. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation.
