Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, extreme right) is shaking hands with J. R. D. Tata (second from right), while Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors, extreme left) looks on. The location of the photograph has not been confirmed. It is likely that the location is either the Bose-Einstein Guest House or the Administration Block, which was occupied in 1968. The Bose-Einstein Guest House then was known as the Institute Guest House.

Mr. H. V. R. Iengar was the second Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He succeeded Dr. A. L. Mudaliar in January 1969 and served as Chairman until January 1972.

Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, also called ‘Jeh’, was the youngest Chairman of Tata Sons Ltd. when he was appointed at the age of 34 in 1938. He remained Chairman for 50 years. He pioneered civil aviation in the Indian Subcontinent in 1932 when he launched Tata Airlines. Interestingly, J. R. D. Tata was the first licensed Indian Pilot. He got his license on 10 February 1929 from the Aero Club of India.

Prof. A. Ramachandran was the second Director of IIT Madras. He succeeded Prof. B. Sengupto in December 1967. He served as Director until May 1973.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
