Mr. Joshy Paul Kallungal receives the Governor’s Prize from Mr. H. V. R. Iengar

Mr. Joshy Paul Kallungal (5 year B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering) won the Governor’s prize (awarded for all-round proficiency in the B. Tech. degree course) in the year 1969. He was well loved by all, including the students of the Central School, during his time at the Institute. He joined IIT Madras in the year 1964 and made his mark in sports the very same year. That year, IIT played host for the 4th Inter IIT Meet and Mr.Joshy Paul Kallungal won the 800, 1500 and 5000 meters and even established records in the 800 and 1500 meters. In total, he held two Inter-IIT track records and four Institute track records. He was also a member of the volleyball team. He was the Institute Sports Secretary (1968) and during his term helped to enter IIT Madras in the Inter-University tournaments. He also held true to the definition of ‘all-rounder’ by winning a merit scholarship twice.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
