Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai was the chief guest at this convocation. It was IIT Madras’ fifth convocation. Dr. Sarabhai was Head of the Atomic Energy Commission at the time.

The Special Merit Prize was handed to the student of the B. Tech degree course with the best academic record. Dilip Bhandarkar (5-year B. Tech., Metallurgy) went on to the University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained a master’s degree and a doctorate. He works (as of December 2020) as Testing Manager and Senior Materials Engineer at Anamet. He also held high positions at Seagate Technology and Western Digital Technologies.

Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
