Mr. S. R. Thangavelu receives the President's Prize from Dr. S. Radhakrishnan

The coveted President’s Prize (best academic record) was secured by Mr. S. R. Thangavelu (B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering). S. R. Thangavelu also received an Institute Merit Prize during the ceremony. He finished his pre-university at P.S.G. Arts College in Coimbatore after which he joined IIT Madras for the B. Tech. course. He paints a vivid picture, along with Mr. V. Sekhar (1965), of the IIT Madras’s initial days in the Oral History Interview conducted by the Institute’s Heritage Centre on the 24th of January, 2018. After graduating, Mr. S. R. Thangavelu worked for a year and a half at Ashok Leyland as a trainee. Then, he returned to IIT for an Industrial Engineering Diploma (PGDIIT). On completion, he eventually went on to receive his Ph.D in the year 1976. From 1970 to 2005 he worked for a number for companies such as American Can Company, AT & T, Lucent Technologies and Boeing. He retired in 2006.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
