This photograph was taken during the 50th Institute Day held on 17 April 2009. Institute Days commemorate achievements of students, faculty and alumni. One of such awards given at the Institute Day is the Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA) which is the highest award IIT Madras presents to its alumni.
Mr. Shrikumar Suryanarayan was one of the recipients that year. In the photograph, he is seen delivering a speech at the 50th Institute Day event. He graduated from IIT Madras with a B.Tech. in Physics in 1982 and is an honorary Director General of the Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises of India (ABLE), and Former President (R&D) of Biocon.
In the photograph, some of the other recipients can also be seen seated on the stage. In the first row (from left to right) are Mr. Jagadeesh S. Moodera, Mr. K. V. Rangaswami (chief guest), Prof. M. S. Ananth (Director of IIT Madras, 2001-2011), Mr. M. G. Parameswaran, Mr. K. Ravi Kumar and Mr. D. Chandrasekhar.
The chief guest for the ceremony was Mr. K. V. Rangaswami, an alumnus of IIT Madras, and the Whole-time Director & President (Construction), L&T Ltd. The ceremony was presided over by the then Director of the Institute, Prof. M. S. Ananth who was Director from 2001-2011.
