Mr. V. R. Nedunchezhian signs the visitor’s book at the Central Workshop

24th November 1967 marked an important milestone in the academic life of IIT Madras as it was the day the Institute launched the first number/issue of its research journal devoted to mathematics and physical sciences. Mr. V. R. Nedunchezhian (Minister of Education, Madras) was the chief guest at the event held to launch the Journal. The Journal was launched with an Editorial Board, composed of eminent mathematicians and scientists in India and abroad. The objective behind the Journal was to establish and maintain a publication in India for research papers of the highest quality. During his visit to the Institute Mr. V. R. Nedunchezhian was escorted by Prof B. Sengupto (Director, IITM) and shown the workshop facilities on the campus. From various images in other collections it is probable that apart from the launch of the Journal in November, the minister visited the Institute earlier in the year for the launch of the Sequential Summer School in Mechanical Engineering. The minister later visited IIT Madras again to attend the Institute’s eleventh convocation in 1974.
