The inauguration ceremony of the Staff Club took place within the premises of the club in the IIT Madras campus. Seated from the left in the photograph include, a person yet to be identified, Mrs. Shanthi Sengupto (wife of Prof. Sengupto), Prof. B. Sengupto (First Director of the Institute), Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (President of Staff Club), and Dr. V. Sivaramakrishnan (General Secretary of the Staff Club).

The Staff Club screened films and showcased dramas, dance and music performances. In the following years the Staff Club also conducted puppet shows, magic shows, mono-acting and many other stage performances for the benefit of its members.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). After working for several years with the Geological Survey of India and being a geologist by qualification, Gourishankar had later started his career as a photographer. Gourishankar was driven to achieve flawlessness and perfection in everything that he did. Thus his photographs had an impeccable quality that characterised them. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
