Mr. Walter Scheel signs the visitor’s book, 1963

The visitor’s book containing signatures of distinguished guests from the year 1963 is preserved at the Heritage Centre of IIT Madras. Mr. Scheel’s signature is the first entry in this book.

Mr. Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1961 to 1966. He went on to serve as President of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1974 to 1979. Mr. Scheel visited the various facilities at IIT Madras including the Central Workshops, some of the laboratories, and also the academic and administrative complexes.

Photographer:

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
