This photograph was taken during the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel. Mrs. Singh, who declared the hostel open, was the wife of Sardar Ujjal Singh, Governor of Madras. Mrs. Singh was accompanied by her husband on the occasion.

Mrs. Shanti Sengupto was the wife of Prof. B. Sengupto, the first Director of IIT Madras.

The photograph shows the ladies on a tour of the new hostel.
