In the early years of the Institute, the academic year was speckled with events. From Convocations and Institute Days to Sports Days and Summer Schools, there was no shortage of activity at the Institute. One among these many events was the ‘Literary and Cultural Week’. This event, as the name suggests, was a week-long inter-collegiate event that was hosted by IIT Madras. A few of the programmes conducted over the duration of the week were quizzes, open group discussions, science fair and even German recitation competitions. The most popular events were the entertainment events such as skits, dance and musical recitations. In the following years, these cultural activities continued and the Literary and Cultural Week was renamed ‘Mardi Gras’. Currently the annual cultural event of IIT Madras is called ‘Saarang’.
