Seen in the image from the left: Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, IITM), Mr. V. R. Nedunchezhian (Minister of Education, Madras) and Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department). The bell being discussed in the image was made by the Central Workshop. The bell was cast at the foundry of the IIT Madras workshop and is believed to have been commissioned by a church (CMC) in Vellore, India.
24th November 1967 marked an important milestone in the academic life of IIT Madras as it was the day the Institute launched the first number/issue of its research journal devoted to mathematics and physical sciences. Mr. V. R. Nedunchezhian (Minister of Education, Madras) was the chief guest at the event held to launch the journal. The Journal was launched with an Editorial Board, composed of eminent mathematicians and scientists in India and abroad. The objective behind the Journal was to establish and maintain a publication in India for research papers of the highest quality.
