Prof. B. Sengupto who can also be seen in the photograph, was the first Director of IIT Madras. As Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (President of the Staff Club) and Mr. Venkataraman can be seen seated on the premises of the Staff Club, the raised platform behind them can still be located there today.

The membership to the Staff Club was open to all the staff members of the Institute and included 240 members at the time it was inaugurated. The members of the Executive Committee included Prof. C. V. Sethunathan (Registrar), Prof. G. Rouve (Department of Civil Engineering), Prof. N. Klein (Department of Humanities), and Dr. B. V. A. Rao (Department of Applied Mechanics).

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). After working for several years with the Geological Survey of India and being a geologist by qualification, Gourishankar had later started his career as a photographer. Gourishankar was driven to achieve flawlessness and perfection in everything that he did. Thus his photographs had an impeccable quality that characterised them. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
